Person Centred Counselling

Person centred counselling is as the terms suggests counselling that centres entirely on the individual. The counsellors’ attention is focussed on developing a therapeutic relationship with the individual and not on theoretical techniques or strategies where it is sometimes possible to lose sight of the individual.

Person centred counselling has its origins in the work of Carl Rogers an American therapist of the 1930’s and 40’s. Paramount to this type of counselling is the therapeutic relationship and the capacity of the counsellor to assist the clients’ self exploration and their enhanced understanding of the issues in their life.

Person centred counselling embraces a non-directive attitude so that the counsellor does not take on the role of appearing like an authority figure or an ‘expert’ having all the answers, but works in gentle partnership enabling the client to find their own inner resources that lead the individual to greater self awareness and personal development.

Person centred counselling promotes the self empowerment of the individual.
